Hornsman Coyote
“Sevengreen”
Reggae
(Ammonite Records, 2017)
10th solo album confirms that Coyote has an inexhaustible source of inspiration for reggae music deep inside himself.
I am pretty sure that many reggae fans felt disappointed once they found out that Hornsman Coyote and band Soulcraft stopped working together. Two studio albums they left behind were one of the best reggae albums in the years they were released. However, independent journeys of two sides have already brought much interesting stuff for reggae world. Firstly, Coyotes new album “Sevengreen”, while Soulcraft has big plans with a new singer and has already recorded a new album. Experiences collected during that long-stand cooperation is impossible to erase and, therefore, will sure effect further work of each side.
When it comes to Coyote, he hasn’t lost the inspiration for reggae music not even in a moment. Not only that, but new album confirms that his inspiration and creativity are on the highest possible level. Band House of Riddim which made all the riddims for this album has also contributed a lot to Coyotes artistic creativity. “Sevengreen” abounds in fresh and new musical and vocal ideas. Vocal arrangements and harmonies have considerably matured, and have been becoming more and more important with every new album. Even though this album is less roots than expected, it still has many great bass lines, so it’s shame they didn’t make few dub instrumentals.
Entire album is fulfilled with positive energy. Coyote sings with special kind of self confidence and belief, as well as with different kind of energy than he had in previous two albums. Listening to him, I have a feeling he was singing all the time with a big smile on his face, even in serious songs such as „Bells of Hate“ and „Modern Age Slavery“. On other songs, his smile would get larger and more powerful, in spiritual and mighty songs such as „Holly Ways“ and „I Belive“.
10th reggae solo album confirms that Coyote has an inexhaustible source of inspiration for reggae music deep inside himself. This is another album which definitely ranked among the best reggae albums in the world this year, so I don’t think there is anything that will stop Coyote from doing this great work in future as well.
